The SECRETS of DRAWING, Perspective Part 5
All you’ll ever need to know about perspective! LEVEL 4
Admittedly, one can have an entire career in comics using the laws of perspective based on those principles established in 1401 by our bro Brunelleschi (see part 1 , 2, 3, 4 ) which we covered, in excruciating details, so far. But there is a higher plane!! let us now revolutionizing those laws of perspectives and unveiling their hidden, mind-astounding truth.
The Curved Perspective Space
If you want to see more, a wider field of view, the old rules are breaking down and you must use the new, Curved perspective space.
Like the old Perspective space, the new Curved Perspective space contains all panels. But the limitation of the triangle of death vanishes as VP smoothly curve back to other VP instead of flying off in crazy nonsense directions.
Now, frankly, setting up such perspective grid is a notorious pain in the butt. When the regular one could be set up with a simple ruler, there's no easy way to do that other one and I've been using a template (which I enlarge or shrink depending of my needs) or just, well fake it.
Hey, they still sell book of grids here. https://www.amazon.com/Sphere-Grid-5-point-Sketchbook-Perspective/dp/B098GKL442
BUT rejoice, if you are working on CSP like I do, it can now generate these grids for you with a few clicks!
By the way, As I type this, the latest version of Clip Studio is like a mere $23.40 for a perpetual copy ( I need to do a post on CSP and how it totally destroys Photoshop for drawing, and expose Adobe for the Money grabbers they are) – Also these Clip Studio guys should start giving me perks for all the free plug have been giving them over the years, ha well ….. Back to perspective.
Use cases
You may ask whether going to all this trouble is worth it
In special case, yes. If you need to see both the horizon and above you, at the same time, for example!

Looking front and down at once. Check out this amazing shot by Jorge Jiménez, Damn!!
Artist Scott McDaniel was using curved perspective seemingly in every panel in the 90’ and 2000’
Maurits Cornelis Escher
One of the uber perspective master of the last century was the Dutch master Escher, 1898-1972. His work is full of graphic tour de force, mad perspective, tessellation and impossible objects and places.
And so there, at last, you have achieved enlightenment. And you can proudly brag that you now know All you’ll ever need to know about perspective!
Practice make Perfect, Bonus
Fully Mastering this is a longer journey. I'll eventually do a bonus episode of that lecture featuring YOUR work, yes, yours. Send me your perspective drawings and I'll share them here, credited and with annotated corrections if need be so we can all learn from each others’ missteps. Because I don't want to get totally overwhelmed with hundreds of submissions, I'll need to extend that invitation to my paying tier only, but you are more than welcome to upgrade your subscription and pitch in.
All the details to submit your work to me can be found here.
Again, massive thanks to those that switched to the Paying tier here. ❤️❤️
These tutorials are available free (for now) as I'm a firm believer in making knowledge available to all! Democratizing education. Still, they are rather time consuming, and your support goes a long way to justify carving time out of my schedule to produce them. Please, consider upgrading to pay tier too, but only if you can, times are rough for everyone.
Please, share Yanick's Art News, comment and subscribe if it's not done already. The content here can NOT be reproduced without my consent. Just reach out first.
You guys are the best. Always.
Big Thanks to my Brother Mark Lipka for making sure my English is half decent this time.
Y
thank you for explaining yourself so well in all these tutorials! I can feel my brain expanding as I read along
These have been fun. I love CSP!
