The SECRETS of DRAWING, Perspective Part 4
All you’ll ever need to know about perspective! LEVEL 3
Welcome back to The SECRETS of DRAWING, Perspective Part 4 , make sure you’ve mastered Part 1, 2, and 3 first.
A new dimension arises!
It’s time folks, a new, untapped type of VP is upon us. The Down or Up VP.
To fully comprehend the significance of this new VP, we must go back to LEVEL 0.
The perspective space and THE TRIANGLE of DEATH ™
Using 3 VPs at once now opens a new, terrifying trap. The final enemy has shown its ugly, revolting, evil head. I’ve seen it break amateurs and professionals alike, showing no remorse while crushing them.
It is … THE TRIANGLE of DEATH ™
But first, let’s discuss the idea of the perspective space.
Every panel from double splash page to small inserts, from cityscape to micro stuff, lives inside the perspective space.
If you join both 90 horizontal VPs and the down VP, they make an ominous triangle …
Yes, Son of Gondor, one shouldn’t venture outside of it lightly. For the same reason we explored in level 2, the outside of the TRIANGLE OF DEATH™ describes a space beyond human experience.
So, when I’m drawing a 3 VP shot, I try to mind the side of the TRIANGLE of DEATH ™ and to play it safe, I usually keep things well INSIDE it.
If I need to see the horizon anyway, I make sure my down (or Up) VP is very far or at infinity to diminish or nullify the distortion effect of crossing the threshold of the TRIANGLE of DEATH ™
Using an infinitely far VP, take it back to the formerly known Level 2 perspective.
Using really far up, or down VP works because the triangle here is SOOOOOO immense that, like the curvature of the earth, it cannot be perceived at this scale.
THE TRIANGLE of DEATH ™ is a capricious beast, but like in our previous episode, let’s remember that rules can be broken when you understand them.
See how the Legend José Luis García-López works with a dizzying wider angle of metropolis by including area outside of our triangle and TWO very close VPs.
Congratulations my friends, you have done it. By mastering Level 3 you can now draw almost any perspective an illustration might require.
But wait, you may ask, wasn’t there a level 4 mentioned earlier?
Ah! YES, glad you asked, there is indeed. The mythical, mind shattering, Escher infused, MADDENING level 4 perspective. If you dare reach for the pinnacle of knowledge, then let’s meet at the very top of the wisdom mountain, and be blindly enlightened by the truth, in our next and ultimate episode of The SECRETS of DRAWING Perspective!
Again, massive thanks to those that switched to the Paying tier here. ❤️❤️
