Tricks or Tips is a subsection of The SECRETS of DRAWING series. These are bits of informations that couldn’t deserve a Masterclass but worth sharing anyway.
Francis Manapul’s Fiber abuser’s brush!
Here Now, time to share another of my custom brushes for your drawing and enjoyment pleasure.
Again, this one is based on an old timer’s trick, but it has been brought to my attention by my friend Francis Manapul a while back ( hence the dedication ).
On paper ( in the olden days ), One would
fill an area with black ink, let it dry
and then with a blunt exacto knife, would shred and abuse the paper top layer fibers getting some pure white back! Pretty rad.
Use the Blunt side of your exacto unless you want to cut your paper entirely. You can also use a metal ruler for straight lines
So of course, a made a digital brush of it, sampling a bunch exacto ‘cuts’ to retain the somehow unpredictable result of the technique. Now, because it’s a digital Brush I can adjust it size and I can ‘draw’ in any color, not just the white of the fibers!
Like the other brushes, Paid subscriber can download my own Clip Studio Francis Manapul’s Fiber Abuser brush here.
Here's a few examples use case in my work.
Probably the best use of it is for Rain! Here’s some of that.
Here as interdimensional spiraling sparkle (I guess you’ll need to read new 52 Batman 49 for this to make sense)
Explosions or nervous speed lines.
As Textures, Here earth/grass, but I’ve done a lot of rocks with it too.
If you end up trying it , please share your usage discovery here too :)
The Secret of Drawing part 1 and this Tricks or Tips will remain available to all, as a free sample. But moving forward, they will fall under the paid subscriptions along with a bunch of other benefit. Please, check it out and consider upgrading your subscription if you can (it’s pretty cheap).
