Artistic Odyssey 1993 - 2013
A little experiment
Here’s a pretty humbling kind of material to share, but may it gives hope the the beginners
In 1993, following the raging fad of the time, my friend Yanick Champoux, Michel Lacombe (yes the same Michel that was inking my stuff 2 decade after on Wolverine Weapon X to Batman Inc) and I created our own variation of the cliché comic book team (including the impregnable background obstructing huge mountain of a dude, the ninja babe, the mysterious gunner, the heroic leader and comic relief creature).
BUT, as I felt my drawing skills were rapidly progressing, I redrew a group shot from earlier that year, gauging my progress. There was sooo much misunderstanding of Jim Lee to purge! All surface glamour with very little understanding of content.
7 years later, as I was by then ending my tenure on my first monthly run (Wonder Woman (1999-2000)), I decided, for the fun of it, to light box the thing again and see where I’ve ended up. By then I’ve learned to describe shape using light and shadows instead of shape contours only.
Then again in 2013 to see what had changed. With a deeper Lights understanding. Using two sources for instance.
It’s been 10 years since; I wonder what had changed now. I should probably give it another go and found out.
Please, consider subscribing to Yanick’s Art News and don’t miss any bits of my shameful past .
And share it if you can. 🙏
This is amazing to see your progression Mate ! I’d love to see your next take on it
Very nice progression. Keep up the tradition, please!
